Beautiful Magazine Art – The Architectural Forum – 1939 World Fairs Issue

(Cover by Burtin)

One of the most stunning issues ever produced by this venerable publication was its famous 1939 World Fairs issue, which featured literally hundreds of beautiful images of both the 1939 World Fair in New York and the World Fair at Treasure Island in San Francisco. Spectacular! Oh, to have a time machine and take a journey to both fairs! (And to buy some extra copies of this magazine!)

Amazing that a copy of this issue of AF has been sitting practically within arm’s reach of my desk for over 20 years–as a kid I was obsessed with the ’39 NY fair and coveted my uncle’s copy of that issue, and eventually he left it to me. It’s great that every ad is fair-themed. Lots of ads for “white-lead” paint. I especially would love to have seen the Petroleum Building at the SF fair lit up at night in “Maxfield Parrish” blue. And it’s so interesting that companies and nations–even counties–could afford serious exhibits at both fairs. These fairs must have been mind-blowing in terms of technology and design. Thanks for reminding me that I have a copy, unlooked at for too long.
